On December 9, the developer reassured the Charlotte Economic Development Committee that their were no neighborhoods within a quarter mile of the new site for their proposed garbage processing plant. They were absolutely correct. What they failed to mention was the number of neighborhoods and schools within a Three Mile Zone that could be impacted by this new garbage processing and transfer station.
The plans would call for all of the garbage and garbage trucks that would deliver our County and City municipal solid waste to the Speedway Landfill to now deliver this to a location off of Graham Street. There it would be sorted to remove about half of the recyclable materials. The other recyclable materials would then undergo an industrial processing to be burned in an incinerator located on the banks of the Catawba River surrounded by other neighborhoods and schools.
It just does not seem right that all of this has not undergone an environmental impact analysis and that we have not had public meeting on this. That’s why we urged the Charlotte City Council to VOTE NO on the revisions to the Mecklenburg County 10-Year Solid Waste Plan.
